Access for English Learners
Overview
Communicating mathematical concepts is a key component of the LoiLoTTP curriculum. Students will engage in discussions about math concepts in various ways and within different group settings. To support English language learners, the curriculum emphasizes creating environments where all students have the opportunity to speak and use language during math lessons.
Here’s how the four support principles are applied to enhance English language development:
1. Support Sense-Making: Scaffold tasks and enhance language to help students create their own understanding of mathematical concepts.
2. Optimize Output: Provide ample opportunities for students to express their mathematical thinking to others, whether through speaking, visuals, or writing.
3. Cultivate Conversation: Foster environments that encourage constructive mathematical conversations among students.
4. Maximize Meta-Awareness: Help students make connections and distinctions between mathematical ideas, reasoning, and language to deepen their understanding.
